CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

“ARIA,” THE MAN said, stomping his feet forward. “Who’s this dog, and why’s he with you? You said nothing to them, right? Answer me, girl.”

The room's door opened, revealing Detective Bradley at its threshold. “What's going on in here?”

West stood like a sinewy mountain between Aria and the man. “Somebody tell me. Why did you interrogate me then let this guy in no problem?”

The man rushed at West and jammed his pointed finger against a peck that proved more rigid than many metals. “Who do you think you are? Sneaking in here while no one's looking and touching my Aria. What are you, some pervert? We’ll have you arrested.”

West’s gaze lowered to the man, who leaned forward on his toes. “Your Aria? She isn’t one to be possessed, and you're a little old to be her boyfriend.”

Detective Bradley quickly broke them apart. “Calm down. This behavior is completely inappropriate. We’re in a hospital.”

“Inappropriate?” the stranger asked in his whiny voice. “Sending a man in here to abuse my Aria's inappropriate. I should sue the city for this. In fact, I’m calling my lawyer right after I leave. Kiss your job goodbye, lady.”

“Get your finger off me before I break it,” West said, and the man withdrew with a grimace. “Now, somebody tell me who this is. And why’s he here?”

“He's my agent, David.”

“Your agent?” he asked her in a sweet voice that starkly contrasted his narrowed gaze. “And he wants to know what you said? He did this, didn’t he? How could you do this to her?”

“Do what?” her agent asked and coyly shrugged with a tilt of his head. He attempted to circumvent West, who proved implacable. “Who’re you supposed to be, anyway? Some kind of cliche meat-head who muscles his way through life. Get this through your thick head. She's a star. They occasionally misbehave. A little drink, a little drugs, what’s the difference? Everybody’ll look the other way because stars misbehave. So stop living in your fantasy world where people do the right thing. They don’t. And she’s worse than the rest of us.”

“There's an investigation into what happened, sir,” Detective Bradley objected.

“Sure there is, honey. Tonight, you badges have your circus, but tomorrow, the mayor will call because holding this young girl hostage is bad for optics.” He slithered around West to Aria's side. “We pushed the show back to tomorrow. We'll get you rested and tomorrow you can make all your fans happy. Then we get paid.”

“She isn't going anywhere until we know who supplied her,” Bradley said. “Regardless of the fantasy world you live in, this drug remains illegal, not to mention incredibly dangerous.”

“The mouth on her, am I right?”

“Enough. Get out. Both of you. Visiting hours are over until someone talks.”

“Yeah, I don't think so,” the agent said, crossing his arms like a child not wanting to attend school. “What’re you going to do?”

West watched Bradley grab Aria's agent by the collar and drag him out with more force than necessary. Not
